The Sahara will play its most special extra time in the Donosti Cup Masters
A Saharawi team over 50 years old will participate for the first time in the XI edition of the tournament, which will gather 109 teams of 10 nationalities.
An old dream comes back to life on the pitch. The Saharawi team over 50 years will debut this summer in the Donosti Cup Master, in what will be a historic participation full of symbolism, emotion and vindication. This is not just any team. It is made up of former students who learned to play soccer in the Sahara refugee camps and later traveled to Cuba to study. There they defended the colors of their homeland in competitions such as the Friendship Games between students from Africa, Latin America and Asia, or the Arab league. Many years later, thanks to the impetus of the Saharawi Sports Federation, their children have been able to inherit the Saharawi jersey. But they, the veterans, never imagined that they would still have a chance to wear it again.
Their presence in this XI edition is a tribute to a whole generation that dreamed of a free country and a recognized national team. And now, thanks to the Donosti Cup Master, soccer offers them a very special extension: the possibility to represent their people again, to fight again with the ball as a flag and to give visibility to the Saharawi cause on an international stage. Because there are dreams that, when they are just, have no expiration date.
